Belgium Beyond the Waffles: 5 Places I Personally Recommend After Visiting Twice

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Belgium twice now — and each trip gave me a completely different perspective on this beautiful country. People know Belgium for its beer, chocolate, and waffles — and yes, they really are that good — but for me, the magic is in its history, its cities, and even its quiet coastal towns.

If you’re planning a trip to Belgium, here are the places I recommend based on my own travels.

1. Bruges – The Storybook City

If you only see one Belgian city, make it Bruges. Its medieval streets, winding canals, and gorgeous squares make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Go in the evening when the city lights reflect on the water — it’s pure magic.

2. Ghent – My Home Base the First Time

I stayed at the Marriott right on the river in Ghent, and it was the perfect jumping-off point. The city is full of history but has a vibrant energy thanks to its university. Don’t miss the castles, cathedral, and lively squares.

3. Brussels – Grand Place & Quirky Attractions

My first visit to Brussels was for the Atomium and Mini-Europe, and my second trip gave me time to finally explore the Grand Place — one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Even if you’re not into big cities, Brussels is worth a day or two.

4. Coastal Belgium – Oostend & Lombardsijde

Oostend is a lively beach city, but my favorite coastal stop was Lombardsijde, where my ex-wife’s family has a beach house. It’s quieter, more local, and perfect for relaxing seaside walks.

5. World War I History – Ypres, Diksmuide & Dinant

My second trip focused on history — visiting the battlefields and memorials around Ypres and Diksmuide was moving and unforgettable. I also visited Dinant, with its dramatic riverside setting, Collegiate Church of Notre Dame, and towering citadel.

Belgium has so much variety packed into a small country — from fairytale cities to coastal charm and powerful history. If you’re ready to plan your own Belgian adventure, I can help you craft an itinerary that blends the must-sees with hidden gems you’ll never forget.
